The weaving of the Ecuadorian toquilla straw hat was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012. It was originally a traditional hat, rooted in the ancient Ecuadorian culture. The strands that Panama hats are made of come from the leaves of the palm Carludovica Palmata.This is boiled to remove chlorophyll and dried for subsequent bleaching with sulfur over a wood fire. From the central rose which is the starting point of the crown to the edge of the brim, the making of a Panama hat is entirely realized by the same person.
